Cohort entry refers to children starting school as a group, at the beginning or midpoint of a term, after or on their 5th birthday as opposed to starting school anytime during the school year. This means new entrants can only start school in week 1 and week 6 of each term.

All new entrant students will start on one of the dates below and we consider this the best option to support your child in transitioning to school. This change will not affect any students that are not new entrants.

New Entrant 2022 start dates:

Term 1: W1 Thursday 3rd February and W6 Monday 7th March

Term 2: W1 Monday 2nd May and W6 Tuesday 7th June

Term 3: W1 Monday 25th July and W6 Monday 29th August

Term 4: W1 Monday 17th October and W6 Monday 21st November

Please ensure that you email or bring your child’s Birth Certificate or Passport with you as well as their Immunisation Certificate. If applicable, proof of residency is also required.  Please call the office prior to your visit, if you have any questions or queries about enrolment.

Class Pre-Visits New Entrants

The Year 0-1 innovative learning environment is called Hoiho.  Your child will have a home teacher but will be taught by all three teachers throughout the year.  The Hoiho Learning Hub is a flexible learning environment (open plan) where students will develop the foundation skills they need to be lifelong learners.

At Waterview Primary School we aim to make your child’s transition to school as seamless as possible. Students are entitled to 3 school pre-visits 1 month prior to their birthday. A visit includes 1 learning block and a break time. Pre-visits are scheduled for Fridays only. Please email one month prior to your child turning 5 to arrange suitable times for pre-visits.

If you have an in-zone child whom you wish to attend Waterview School please contact the school (09 828 7227) to have their name put onto our preschool list. Parents will be contacted several weeks prior to the child’s birthday to arrange an enrolment interview. At this stage, we ask that you complete the online enrolment form as this will provide us with the information required by the Ministry of Education & our school. The following original documentation will need to be brought to the interview.

  • Your child’s Birth Certificate or NZ Passport (if your child was not born in NZ their passport is required)

  • Parent’s Passport (If the child has a parent who was not born in NZ and does not speak English as their first language, we must photocopy the parent’s passport for ESOL funding).

  • Immunisation record (Plunket book or Medical History)

  • Proof of address x 2 (e.g. Phone account – Power account – Gas account – Rental Tenancy Agreement – Rates account – Sale and Purchase Agreement)

For New Entrants, Waterview runs an Induction Programme that consists of visits to the school prior to the intake start date (generally the 1st and 6th Mondays of each term) Click here to check out the Official MoE Cohort Dates. This program ensures a smooth and happy start to school life (for both children and parents) as the children get to know other children they will start with and Mums and Dads get to meet other parents. For all other students (Y2-6) enrolment interviews are organised when you make contact with the school.   **Please note that due to COVID-19, we have currently put all pre-visits on hold until further notice**

As a general guideline all students starting in Intake 4 (mid Term 2, Birth date 1st May and after) and after will be classified New Entrants and will be in Year 1 the following year. In all cases, a minimum of 18 months will be spent in years one and two.
