Learning about the Powhiri

The children have been learning about the Powhiri - a welcoming ceremony involving speeches, dances, singing and the hongi during their Te Reo lessons with Whaea Tania this term. The Powhiri is used to welcome guests onto a marae or various important ceremonies. We put our learning into practise to welcome the teachers into the school - it was a great learning experience that was followed up with a whole school shared lunch involving whanau, students and school staff. Check out some parts of our practise Powhiri below!

Whole school visit to the Pacifica Arts Centre

Our Topic this term has been Visual Art. All three teams have been learning about various art types and artists. Each team were lucky enough to visit the Pacifica Arts Centre in Waitakere. The love and learning of the pacifica culture is expressed through various art forms of music, song, dance, prayer, language, visual art, performing arts and traditional arts. The Pacifica Arts Centre enables new knowledge and celebrates growth by providing a home for Pacific arts and culture of all kinds. Waterview Primary had an amazing time learning about the various art forms of the Pacifica culture as shown in the video below. Thank you to the Pacifica Arts Centre for having us and for showering us with your kind, knowledgable and welcoming presence.
