Cohort entry refers to children starting school as a group, at the beginning or midpoint of a term, after or on their 5th birthday as opposed to starting school anytime during the school year. This means new entrants can only start school in week 1 and week 6 of each term.

All new entrant students will start on one of the dates below and we consider this the best option to support your child in transitioning to school. This change will not affect any students that are not new entrants.

Term 1: Week 1 Monday 02nd February and Week 6 Monday 109th March 

Term 2: Week 1 Monday 20th April and Week 6 Monday 25th May

Term 3: Week 1 Monday 20th July and Week 6 Monday 24th August 

Term 4: Week 1 Monday 12th October and Week 6 Monday 16th November

The Year 0-1 innovative learning environment is called Hoiho.  Your child will have a home teacher but will be taught by all 2/3 teachers throughout the year.  The Hoiho Learning Hub is a flexible learning environment (open plan) where students will develop the foundation skills they need to be lifelong learners.​

At Waterview Primary School we aim to make your child’s transition to school as seamless as possible. Students are entitled to 3 school pre-visits 1 month prior to their birthday. A visit includes 1 learning block and a break time. Pre-visits are scheduled for Fridays only. Please email hoiho@waterview.school.nz one month prior to your child turning 5 to arrange suitable times for pre-visits.

On your child’s first day at school please report to the office between 8.30 am and 8.55 am.  You are welcome to stay a short time with your child as part of the settling-in process.  Please discuss this further with the classroom teacher on your arrival.

Learning packs are $45 which include all the stationery your child needs to be prepared for school.

The school account number is ASB 12-3109-0011786-00. Use this to make a stationary purchase. Put your child’s name as a reference. ​

If you have an in-zone child whom you wish to attend Waterview School please complete an online enrolment online application. & provide us with the information required by the Ministry of Education & our school. The following documentation will need to be provided to the school before your child can start school.

• Your child’s Birth Certificate or NZ Passport (if your child was not born in NZ their passport & visa documention is required)

• Immunisation record (Plunket book or Medical History)

• Proof of address x 2 (e.g. Phone account – Power account – Gas account – Rental Tenancy Agreement – Rates account – Sale and Purchase Agreement)

• Parent’s Passport (If the child has a parent who was not born in NZ and does not speak English as their first language, we must photocopy the parent’s passport for ESOL funding).
  

Children may not start school before their 5th birthday in Aotearoa.

This system is to ensure our students are given the opportunity to deveolp a strong foundation for their ongoing learning journey, and so they are not too young to transition to High School.

• Children who start school at age five in Term One in the first cohort are classified as Year 1 and automatically move up a level at the beginning of each year. 
• Children who start in Terms 2, 3 & 4 at the age of five will be classified as Year 0 and will start as Year 1 the following year to starting.

**Any children who enrol and start school aged six, will be classified as Year 2**
